Ocotillo, Big Bend 2019

Like many, I am obsessed with Ocotillo. It's probably the most recognizable desert plants in the Big Bend. With spiny stems reaching skyward, they create the most unusual vistas. Ocotillo means fiery torch in spanish for its red flowers that bloom each spring. The flowers and seeds are edible. Native people made tea out the ocotillo bark and flowers in order to treat swelling and sore muscles. We often burn Ocotillo bark as incense.
